Pacific Rim Video Crew Coverage

Pacific Rim Video recently covered us and our journey to Hip Hop International!

Check out the article below or head to the article on their website here: It’s a Fam Biz at Hip Hop International with [Fam]ily [Biz]ness MegaCrew

It’s a Fam Biz at Hip Hop International with [Fam]ily [Biz]ness MegaCrew

By Emeroy Bernardo of Fam Biz
Established during the summer of 2004, [FAM]ily [BIZ]ness started as a collection of friends performing for debuts and church events, and eventually grew more than just a small group as the years passed. While many other high school kids were out at the mall hanging out with friends, these dancers were out at parks and parking lots choreographing planning their next performance routine. To this very moment,FamBiz stands out as a story of not only determined passion and inspired talent, but that of a group of friends who could not help but follow a shared dream.
Fam Biz has been busy with a wide variety of  preparation for Hip Hop International. We’ve been doing high intensity endurance training, meditation, and yoga along with our short but intense rehearsal schedule.
To help defray costs of traveling to Las Vegas, we’ve been doing a lot of fundraisers via workshops, bake sales, etc.
Fam Biz will be competing as a Mega Crew this year whereas last year we only did the Adult Division with 7 dancers. This year we’re going with our strongest 15 out of our 36 members. With HHi only a few weeks away, practices are only getting more intense!
For more information on our crew check us out at http://e3klives.wix.com/fambiz#!home/mainPage

End of The Season

Every season has to come to an end. After 10 months of dancing, we had our celebration our journey together this past weekend. With the company of good food and energy, this season is certainly one to remember. One of growth and reaching new heights. Awards were handed out both hilarious and deserving. And one award we particularly give out for those who have put in the time.

To close out the formal events we watched a recap of the time that past, a recap of all the.hard work, the joy and the laughter, and all the places we went to. knowing its all memory now. A journey we took together, and memories that will be a part of us forever.

3 Categories in Self-Evaluation

Everyone has their own way of grading themself as a dancer. Some just go by their overall feeling of how they did while some others tend to break it down such as they felt their facials drop or they lost energy at one point of the routine.

I enjoy being able to measure how I did with the overall dance. I love hearing feedback from other people to see what I can work on. But sometimes, there are those times when the feedback from others doesn't seem to click or it's honestly just useless for what you want.

And if you're coming from the realm of "there's always room for improvement," you'll definitely always want some sort of feedback, and to be honest, not everyone's feedback is always gonna be useful to you.

Giving honest feedback to yourself is just as good if not better. You can instantly grade yourself and immediately get yourself prepared on the improvements you want.

In giving yourself feedback, be brutally honest with yourself, but take it for what it is, don't sugar coat it or take it worse than what it is. It won't serve you in either case.

Here are 3 categories I use as measuring sticks in getting the overall feedback for myself as a dancer. These are categories I keep in mind during rehearsal. I give myself a grade (rating from 1-10 or a letter grade) so I can improve on each run through and each rehearsal. It allows me to be aware of what needs to be worked on instead of guessing.

1. Energy.
We all are receptive to the energy we give one another. If we show up with the energy of anger or frustration, the people around us will definitely pick up on that. It's the same thing when it comes to performing on stage, are you performing a high energy routine, a smooth energy, or a swag energy? Being mindful of what energy you're giving off will contribute to the experience for the audience.

2. Performance
Each person may define performance differently, but I define performance to the facials in the routine. Again, depending on the energy being given off, is my face saying it as well? Or is it just a zombie-blank-face doing moves. I've seen many talented dancers with a dead face. It's like watching a zombie.

3. Execution.
Technique, knowledge of the dance. How well do you know each detail of the routine? How well do you know the music? This is practicing to the point that the dance is second nature to you.

"Master the music, master the instrument. Then forget all that shit and play."

With these 3 categories, I'm able to evaluate myself quickly and honestly. I take it for what it is and never blow it up out of proportion. With the information that I gather, I fix what needs work and move on.
We all are striving to progress and hone our craft. Getting feedback from others may not always be there. This is simply my own way of improving. It may or may not work for you, but I hope you've gotten some sort of insight.

If you've got  your own way of evaluating yourself, I'd love to hear it!

Work Ethic

One of our core members, Roxine, found this post on Jayvee Dance Center's Facebook wall a little while ago and had shared it in an e-mail.

I am not that old (yet.)

But I AM old enough to see a difference in generations of dance. This current generation is mind blowingly talented but scarily missing the work ethics of my slightly less talented generation as well as those that came before us. As most of you will dance for my generation or the generations prior; here is what was expected of us that we naturally and collectively, expect from you.

NEVER mark.

Why pay for a class and mark until you get into groups? Groups occur for MAYBE 10 minutes. Most of which you'll spend trying to figure out the parts you've been marking.

Don't sit. Don't yawn. Be on time. If anything, be early.

Touching your toes and sitting in a grande plie 2nd for a minute does not a sufficient warm up make. Put your phones AWAY. Be hungry to know EVERYTHING about your art; ESPECIALLY its history. you would not be here without those that came before you. You MUST be able to hold an intelligent conversation about the art form that you have chosen to make your life's purpose.

If you miss rehearsal, get with someone prior to learn the choreography you don't know.

If you don't make the youtube video, don't get the job, or don't get called out for the "special" group; it doesn't mean you stop coming to class. in fact, the very opposite. you KEEP SHOWING UP. Perseverance and SHOWING UP is often how a job is booked.

If a dance doesn't win, it doesn't mean it's bad. If a choreographer isn't on SYTYCD, it doesn't mean they aren't worth working with.

If a teacher can't book you something, it doesn't mean their class isn't worth taking. Know loyalty. ALWAYS remember where you came from and who got you there.

Be humble.

Even if that older dancer can't turn as many times as you; there's a reason why they've booked so many jobs and are STILL working. Respect and learn from them. Be responsible for your energy. Come to class to be inspired but be responsible for what you bring to the table too. Never treat the role of an understudy as a waste of time. It is often a fruitful opportunity of a lifetime.

Be self motivated and self driven. Do your homework. Go to ballet. Go to african. Go to modern. Go to EVERYTHING. The class and/or teacher that challenges you most; is usually where and who you are growing most from.

If you're injured, be smart. Know what it is to work internally; without expectation of reward or instant gratification.

Be open to criticism. Be OPEN (period.)

If you commit to something follow it through with enthusiasm or drop out completely. We are in a line of work that people throw their life, their savings, and their whole heart into. Don't destroy it by giving anybody less than your best. Don't be SHADY. If you know someone say, "Hi" regardless of whether it makes you look good in that moment.

If you see a video you dig on Facebook, like it. If you like a video on YouTube, share it.

If someone is better than you in class, shout out a "werk" and study the hell out of 'em.

And finally, know that dance does not come over night. or over months. Or even years. It happens throughout a LIFETIME process that is to be adored despite struggle. Love every second of it for genuine reason and you will probably find yourself doing all this naturally.

Hello World!

I know it feels like forever since we posted something up! We've gotten caught up with the grind of the season, but we're back!

We've had quite the eventful second half of the season. And still plenty of it that we get to share with you all!

Here are a couple things we've done since we last spoke:

1. Urban Street Jam

2. Lunar Festival
We had the opportunity to perform at Alhambra's Lunar New Year Festival. We were blessed to be able to perform twice that day. Once as spokes-dancers for Verizon and a second time representing Jayvee Dance Center!
These kind of performances are always fun, there's no stress of competition or judges. Just putting on an amazing show for the people.

3. The Road to World of Dance
We're currently in the middle of our hell week getting ready for World of Dance! We're looking forward to sharing with everyone what we've been putting together and seeing what everyone else puts down on the floor!

This particular scene in Rocky was just popping up in my mind throughout the weekend and last night I listened to it with my girlfriend. I think it's truly an amazing speech.

It makes me think of how children are: free, curious, courageous, honest and so much more. Growing up a lot I remember being told that I could be anything I want to be and that anything was possible. But somewhere a long the way, I heard that not all dreams come true, that I have to be "realistic." I was told what I can and can't do and I believed it. I was taught to be afraid to take risks for fear of judgement and rejection.

Fear is a learned behavior.

But not anymore, I'm connecting with that inner child. The child that was care free, did what he wanted when he wanted, and wasn't afraid of being judged. Be childlike, not childish.

2. Team work

I have been experimenting with having my students work with each other for my dance classes. The great thing I get to do as a dance teacher is not only teach dance, but I get to teach them some life lessons through dance.

There's more to life than dance. There's more to dance than dance.

One of the things I've been wanting to teach them since last year was getting them work together.

The results were amazing. All I did was set the ground rules and what I wanted them to do, and throughout the span of an hour, students learned something new, further progressed their mastery in the dance style, and developed relationships with each other.

I'm not going to use it all the time, but it's definitely a new tool I can use to develop the students in their dance.

3. "Your belief determines your action and your action determines your results, but first you have to believe." -Mark Victor Hansen

I was speaking with a friend of mine from Fam Biz this past weekend. I was sharing that freestyling is going to be a part of rehearsal. I know for a fact that he isn't comfortable freestyling because he's told, but I see in him a lot of courage. I know how scared he is going into a freestyle circle because I see exactly the kind of fear I had when I started freestyling. I remember thinking to myself I can't do it and thinking to myself that I suck.

Guess what? I was right. I believed that I couldn't do it and I believed I would suck. It lead to sucky results which either was me not going in at all because I let fear paralyze me or me doing a sucky freestyle because I let fear flow in my dance instead of my love and passion for it.

My friend has taken a first step in overcoming his limiting belief about his freestyling and is coming out to take my Tuesday night class. I'll keep you all updated!

Bboy Venum Workshop

By Matt Da 5hat

Last Sunday I took a Bboy workshop from Bboy Venum of the Skill Methodz crew, LXD, the world famous Rocksteady Crew and seen in movies such as Step up 3d and not to mention hip hop superteam the Groovaloos.

The first time I have ever seen Bboy Venum was from Freestyle Session 7. Probably one of the sickest events ever. Bboy Venum straight up went in the circle during the battle and totally ripped a new one in it. His floorwork, transitions, freezes, power moves and style got me. This guy was the total package. Not to mention his crew SKMZ, these guys are raw.

Fast forward to today and this Bboy is still ripping it worldwide.
So last Sunday I took his workshop along with a special guest his girlfriend, Bgirl Tanya from the Russian Steps crew, this Bgirl is ill and don't let the pretty face fool you.

Bboy Venum showed us different ways to get into our moves or "go downs." This is a very important part of bboying the transition between toprock to the floor. He took his time with us knowing we weren't that advanced which was really dope. I must admit even though it was an honor to go right after him in the cypher I messed up a little and he told me to go back in which was really cool.

Bgirl Tanya showed us different toprock combinations that I never knew that were possible. The combinations were real fresh. We were practicing Russian kicks which are pretty much the basis for footwork.

In the middle of the workshop when the dancing was paused he sat us down and told us why he does workshops for free. He basically explained that when he was young he couldn't make it out to dance workshops because of financial struggles and living in an unstable environment as a child.

Bboy Venum honestly does these workshops out of the goodness of his heart, this Bboy is real. He also wanted us to invite anybody we could because its a free workshop to express yourself through the art of bboying. This ties in to the whole each one teach one concept. It's all about educating each other and not leaving anyone in the dark. Knowledge is power. Open minds open hearts. This workshop was very inspirational to me and I got to meet a Bboy that I look up to.

Be sure to look him up on his Facebook fan page Jaime Venum Burgos to get more information on his workshops!

This is your friendly neighborhood Mattda5hat signing off!

Inspired #19

By Emeroy Bernardo

This was inspired by the writer of The Simple Dollar. Every week I will be sharing the top 3 things that have inspired me as a person throughout the week.

1. This Is A Call
I recently stumbled upon this song I heard back in high school. This song really touched my heart back then and still continues to do so now, it's one of the songs that moved me to tears. It's an inspiring song and a great listen.

2. Metta Meditation
I was recently looking up what Metta meant in Metta World Peace and I found much more than I was looking for. I found a form of meditation that I would like to try out, Metta Meditation, or Loving-Kindness Meditation.

From what I understand, "Metta is loving-kindness, benevolence, amity, friendship, good will, kindness, close mental union, and active interest in others." It starts with the meditator at first giving loving-kindness towards themselves, then their loved ones, friends, strangers, enemies and finally towards all sentient beings.

I'm really intrigued from just scratching the surface and I'm excited to learn more about it.

3. Fam Biz Auditions
Fam Biz auditions were recently held this past week and I would first like to say congratulations and welcome to all the new dancers to the Fam Biz family. I'm glad to say that we are now 36 dancers strong! I'm excited and honored to be able to a part of leading this team for the next 5 months!

Inspired #18

By Emeroy Bernardo

This was inspired by the writer of The Simple Dollar. Every week I will be sharing the top 3 things that have inspired me as a person throughout the week.

Sorry I missed posting last week!

1. MITT Advanced Course
Sunday, January 8 I graduated from my Advanced Course with MITT. I have to say it was one of the most life changing 5 days I've ever had. There were a lot of eye openers that were brought to my attention.
For example, I knew there were things that were holding me back, but I never knew in what scale and where it stemmed from.
I've learned more about myself here than anywhere else. I've read plenty of quotes saying, "Life isn't about finding yourself, it's about creating yourself," and "there's always room for improvement."
I truly feel like those aren't just quotes anymore, they're a reality. The only thing that can ever stop me is me.

2. Jayvee Instructor Retreat

This past weekend was Jayvee Dance Center's instructor retreat! A couple reasons why I was excited.

This wasn't taken from the trip. But damn it's beautiful!

1. It's a get away from the city. I love living in the city. But sometimes it's just great to get away from it all and not worry about responsibility. It's like a quick sigh of relief.
2. Create a connection with the other instructors. I'm pretty good acquaintances with most of the instructors in Jayvee, but I don't really know who they are as people. I saw this as a great opportunity to build not only the friendships I have now, but to also build some new ones as well.

3. Seeing snow fall for the first time

During the last day of the retreat, it started raining, or so I thought. The moment some of the other instructors started saying it was snowing it took me a couple of moments to actually let it register. I couldn't help be lost in wonder as I watched it fall. I felt like a little kid again. It was such an amazing experience and such a blessing that I was able to watch it before heading back home.

Koan #5

What Is A Koan? The purpose of a koan is to get you out of your head and into your heart. The heart just lives the moment. It is not concerned with the future or the past.

“A koan is a fundamental part of the history and lore of Zen Buddhism. It consists of a story, dialogue, question, or statement whose meaning cannot be accessed by rational thinking, yet it may be accessible by intuition.”

We stand in our own shadow and
wonder why it is dark!

"When we think there is a problem in life, we should realize that the problem actually lies within us. We may not be able to transform the situation, but we can transform ourselves and how we perceive our lives.

When we look at things from the view point of our separate ego-self, we cast a shadow which obscures the light of our essential self and everything seems dark. If we turn and face the light, we rise above our limited self-interest and can see the whole picture."

Inspired #17

By Emeroy Bernardo

This was inspired by the writer of The Simple Dollar. Every week I will be sharing the top 3 things that have inspired me as a person throughout the week.

1. The secret of living is giving

Give, give, give. I saw this quote the other day at a gas station. It was a message that was scrolling by on the screen where you swipe your card and whatnot. It blew me away simply because I wouldn't expect to see this message at a gas station. And it was a great reminder that going is truly greater than receiving.

2. The New Year
It's finally 2012! Oh how 2011 came and went so quickly.
I'm reminded of one of the lessons I leaned in meditation is the things come and go. It's a cliche and common thing we all know but what we do about it is what matters. What I do about it matters.

I was told life only gets faster as the years come. It doesn't slow down to the pace of how things were when we were children. I definitely don't wan life to just pass me by. I'm well aware that I can get caught up with things that take me away from the moment, but I'm committed to experiencing each moment that comes.
2011 was an amazing year. It was definitely filled with blessings and trials, but its helped evolve me into who I am.
It was a true learning experience and I'm thankful to be able to live another year let alone another day.
Greater things are yet to come. I'm not The hugest fan of new years resolutions, but I am committed to making 2012 and extraordinary year.

3. Life in a Day
Have you ever though of what someone else in the world is doing right now? Think about it. Aside from the world you are currently living someone else is living theirs. They could be just waking up, going on a date, in the hospital fighting cancer, or holding their new born baby for the first time.
This is exactly what this movie about. A single day where individuals from 192 countries are sharing their own life experience in front of the camera.

I found it inspiring and humbling as it reminded me of when I went to Jamaica with some friends awhile back to do some missionary work at some orphanages(a story I'll share another time). It opened my eyes as to how lucky I truly am to have what I have. This movie is definitely a strong recommendation for everyone.
