Uplifting Words From The Dalai Lama

 By Emeroy Bernardo

I love using StumbleUpon, and I especially love it when it leads me to insightful and motivational quotes. These are a list of quotes from the Dalai Lama that I found and just had to share it.

1. Take into account that great love and great achievements
involve great risk.
2. When you lose, don't lose the lesson.

3. Follow the three R's:
Respect for self
Respect for others and
Responsibility for all your actions.

4. Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a
wonderful stroke of luck.

5. Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly.

6. Don't let a little dispute injure a great friendship.

7. When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate
steps to correct it.

8. Spend some time alone every day.

9. Open your arms to change, but don't let go of your values.

10. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.

11. Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think
back, you'll be able to enjoy it a second time.

12. A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation for your
life.

13. In disagreements with loved ones, deal only with the current
situation. Don't bring up the past.

14. Share your knowledge. It's a way to achieve immortality.

15. Be gentle with the earth.

16. Once a year, go someplace you've never been before.

17. Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love
for each other exceeds your need for each other.

18. Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get
it.

19. Approach love and cooking with reckless abandon.

The Road to Hip Hop International

By Emeroy Bernardo

It’s been about three and a half weeks since the chosen 7 of FamBiz started up rehearsals for Hip Hop International. This is the first time we’ll be competing at this competition. While three of us have been to the competition, only one of us has actually had the opportunity to compete. We have no idea what to expect, and all we can really do is prepare.

It’s been 7 rehearsals and things seem promising for us. Right from the get-go we’ve hit the ground running. We’ve adopted a workout routine before every practice, designed to attack every muscle group at once to quickly raise everyone’s heart rate so we can build up our stamina. Even though Hip Hop International only demands a 2 minute routine, it’s what’s in those 2 minutes that really count. And with only 6 rehearsals left there really isn’t any time for messing around.

For those of you who aren’t too familiar with how Hip Hop International works, here’s a quick rundown.
Along with the criteria of performance, staging, crowd appeal, showmanship, and execution , each crew must perform a minimum of three street dance styles (this includes party dances).
Considering that not all of us break and not all of us lock, it’s been a challenging and enjoyable experience seeing everyone evolve and step out of their comfort zone.

Along with the requirement of three street styles, there’ll be a panel of eight judges.

4 Skill Judges, 4 Performance Judges

Performance Judges
They evaluate and score the routine according to performance, creativity, staging, showmanship, street presents, and variety of styles

Skill Judges
They evaluate and score the musicality, synchronization, execution, and difficulty.

So considering the fact that this is a maximum of eight dancers and not a sizable group like 20 or 30, it’s practically one set of eyes watching each and every one of us. There’s no hiding in this competition, if a person is unable to execute, everyone will be able to see.

Overall this is a new challenge for us, which has made us set the bar higher for ourselves. Whether we win or not, we’ll see what happens. It’s just exciting to be a part of this opportunity and to be able to share that floor with many talented dancers from across the world. Even though this is just the beginning of our journey, it is exciting thinking about what’s to come.

Movement Lifestyles new STUDIO!

By CJ Capili

This was a picture from the Day 2 Grand Opening of Movement Lifestyles new studio!
Quite a crowd to be seen, so many dancers and so many faces from different areas! I wasn’t able
to attend this due lack of money, but it seemed like it was a blast.

A class line up that spanned of 3 days, and the price was only for 10 dollars! From Shaun
Evaristo, Lyle Beniga, Brian Puspo, Andrey J, Sh*t Kingz, Keone & Mari, and Jun Quemado!
This lineup of choreographers really makes a grand opening for a studio great! Aside from that
they also held an encore on that Friday as well from
Bam Martin, Shaun Evaristo, and Rie Hata!

Aside from not being able to make it to the grand opening, I’m glad another studio has been
opened to the community! Allowing more dancers to seek different locations to take classes and
just be inspired altogether with the knowledge these choreographers has been bringing to the
dancing community since the beginning.

For the location of the studio:

Fearless

By KennyDiamond

Can you honestly say that you have exist each day without trepidation?
Some may actually live life fearless while others say so just to look
grand. But as a usual aspect of human nature, fear is only a state of
mind. People grow fears from all kinds of ways. Poor experiences from
a younger years, present tragedies or even just witnessing the
misfortune of someone other than one’s self. I’m sure there are more,
but these are the most usual examples I can think of as far as where
fears may develop.

Although they appear ordinary, one that is more ordinary than those is
the fear of the uncertain. People have the fear(s) of things they have
never experienced in their lives and some never overcome that fear.
Some, if not many, people are fearful of heights (acrophobia) and
flying or swimming in the ocean. Others are afraid of spiders;
arachnophobia. However, fear is something we can challenge, suppress
and overcome.

Some fears are more solemn than others, like ones that really put an
end to certain people from living their lives. But I think that given
the chance to confront your fear, you have an even higher chance of
overcoming it. It might be a good gamble. You pretty much have nothing
to lose and everything else to acquire from it, such as the life you
would like to live: fearless. So what are you afraid of?

Respect The Process

By Emeroy Bernardo

We live in a society of instant gratification. We get everything with the touch of a button. Instead of sending letters to friends, we simply text them or send them a message on Facebook. Many people don’t use the library to get information they need anymore, Google does most that work for you. A lot of the work nowadays has been simplified thanks to the power of technology.

Technology has it’s huge advantages, I honestly would be going mad if I had to use a typewriter to write this post out. But it also has it’s down-sides as well.

“All Good Things Come In Time.” But throughout all these advancements in technology and making things user friendly, many people have forgotten that message.

If you truly want to be a master at something, true success is a step by step process. Quick schemes really lead to no where. This applies to everyone no matter how naturally talented a person may be.

“Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.”

Mastery = Time + Focus + Energy

Time
Along with time, patience will come a long way in your journey towards mastery. With technology making things easier and more convenient for us, it’s also made us much more impatient. Always keep in mind that all good things come with time. Rome wasn’t built in a day, nor was the city of New York or Los Angeles. The tallest of sky scrapers took the most time investment. View your craft like building, the more time you invest in it, the more you can build. And the more you build, the more likely you’ll be seen as a heralding skyscraper.

Focus
Distractions can lead to a short circuit. With the many things that are out there, a lot of us have settled with just scratching the surface with knowledge instead of going into depth. Especially on tasks that seem trivial or daunting, it’s times like those that we must strengthen our focus.
Don’t split your focus on too many things, other wise you’ll never attain what you wanted in the first place,

Energy
We all have energy when we start something. It’s something new, we’re excited. But as time wears on, so does our energy. Eventually we may come to a point that we just don’t want to keep pushing any more, the grind has worn us down. Whatever it may be, there’s nothing wrong with taking a quick step back to recuperate then get back to it. Do what it takes to regain that energy, just as long as you don’t abandon what you started.

People often have a general feeling of insecurity because they’ve never really mastered something. It’s like they have a sense of failing before starting. Master something simple at first and over come that basic insecurity to build that pattern of confidence.

The key for all these elements is really how bad you want it. Your desire. If you truly have desire and love for what you’re doing, all the so called “work” that may seem daunting won’t seem at all bad. You’ll see how necessary they are in your progress.

One of the reasons we fail to truly master something is our inability to be alone and sit still. We simply HATE boredom. Once we’re bored of something, it’s onto the next thing.

“All of man’s troubles come from not knowing how to sit still, alone in a room.”
                                                                          -Blaise Pascal

To feel inspired you must first experience a moment of emptiness. You can use boredom, to slow things down, and develop patience and self-discipline. I myself use Zazen meditation to help me strengthen myself in this area. I’m well aware that I can be sometimes impatient and want things done “RIGHT NOW,” but through this form of meditation, it allows me to sit with my emotions and not run away from it so I can have a clearer mind when I take action.

Mastery of any craft requires time and patience. THERE ARE NO SHORTCUTS. Today’s society has taken away this element and has made us creatures of impatience. Gain experience through trial and error. Experiment and don’t be afraid to take hard blows. See what truly works and what doesn’t. The more expose yourself to your craft, the more you develop your intuition for it. Anything will give way to as long as you have a persistent and unrelenting attack on your part.

Frustrated

By KennyDiamond

Try. Fail to succeed. Try again. Still unsuccessful. Try… again?

When you have failed to complete something, no matter how much you
try, it will frustrate you. This feeling of being discouraged doesn’t
feel all too good. Some can grasp it, others cannot. Some will gladly
progress onto something else and others may develop a lot of anxiety
from it. Regardless, becoming frustrated is something you can alter.
Rather than allowing it to discourage you, take a step back and try to
make sense of it. Instead of feeling as if you have failed, you need
to notice the amount experience you gained. Take water for example. No
matter where it is, it always finds a way to persist. It doesn’t get
frustrated nor does it dwell on the fact that it has been temporarily
stopped because it manages to find a way to continue. It will
evaporate, condense, seep through or overflow. Like the great Bruce
Lee once said:

“Don’t get set into one form, adapt it and build your own, and let it
grow, be like water. Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless — like
water. Now you put water in a cup, it becomes the cup; You put water
into a bottle, it becomes the bottle; You put it in a teapot, it
becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my
friend.”

Frustration is non-permanent and it can be changed. So how will you continue?

The Change

By CJ Capili

Summer has fallen, and the heat as risen the question now comes to mind: “What do we do?” While the others are at the beach having fun, or working to have some pocket money, there are people who are training to become better dancers. Dancers who are seeking new skills, new styles, and most likely trying to refine their art, a reason to why a dancer we once knew last year is now a completely different person over the course of the summer. Change can occur at any moment, and while summer has opened its arms to us, there are a select few of dancers who either take a break or continue on a spree to refine their style and take on the challenges that one dancer will face in the future.

While change occurs throughout our whole existence, there are those who refuse to change, those who find the change too hard, those who find change as something that’ll hurt them, and so on and so forth.  But in reality, these are just excuses made to make their own life easier and to avoid the realities of life. When change occurs, we don’t take a second to hesitate what that change will become, we don’t tell ourselves “I’ll do this, I’ll do that, and I’ll try my best.” It’s like what Emeroy Bernardo would usually just tell me “Just do it.” Do it on a whim, without hesitation, or doubt. Go forth and take on the change, take a risk. Life is all about taking risks, and not taking it sometimes can lead us to miss out on the best experiences in our life.

Though change can bring forth something new in someone’s life, it doesn’t mean it’ll happen overnight. Changes in our lives will always happen slowly, but that slow progression will always bring great results as long as we become humble, patient, and willing for that change to happen. As a dancer we just need to embrace the change, and take on the different styles there is to offer, though it may feel uncomfortable and “wack” we must dive into it like no other. Because the end result of taking classes of different styles can leave us amazed and in awe because we find some new power that leaves us enlightened and even more skilled a dancer.

As long as our mind, body and soul are intact we can excel like no other.
As long as the drive to dance is there, you can always become the dancer you dream to be.
Inspirations come from the heart and mind, but it’s the people around us who inspire us.
Dream big and aim high, we are like birds, freely flying into the sky nothing holding us down.

The History of a Writer

By KennyDiamond

Today, someone asked me why I write. And it got me thinking, why do I write?

If I think back to when I was growing up, I wasn’t much of a writer.
Writing was always a chore, writing was… homework, writing was…
letters of apology to people I didn’t particularly care for,
apologizing for things which I wasn’t particularly sorry about, but
I’ve always had one hell of an imagination, that’s one thing I’ve
never had trouble with. Growing up my imagination was all I had to
escape to when life just got too much.

Growing up I had gone through more than most kids have to deal with at
that age and in all honesty that lead to a great deal of pent up
anger, that just kept building deep inside, waiting to explode.. to
errupt. Every now and then it would.

Long story short. Having one day put my fist through a window out of
rage… I sat bleeding in a dark room, I started typing away at my
laptop. I don’t particularly know what I wrote. Didn’t save it. But
that was the first time I wrote for me. To borrow a few words from
William Wordsworth, I literally “filled my paper with the breathings
of my heart.”, and that’s really where it all began.

Although after that, I didn’t write again for quite sometime, even
though there and then was when I had developed a love for writing. I
was never quite the artist but I loved drawing and sketching. So when
faced with the choice of creative writing or drawing at school (they
clashed), I picked writing.

Writing did for me then what drawing hadn’t. Writing gave me a way of
putting my complete and utter raw emotion to paper. It was easy to put
my inner most thoughts out there, but the crucial thing was, writing
came with the safety of knowing that it is open to interpretation.
Kind of like riding a bike with your dad holding on behind. It was
only after leaving school I realized the two (writing and drawing)
weren’t so different.

So why do I write? Well words are an amazing tool, words can be molded
into whatever you what them to be, they can tell a story, they can be
a poem. Words can make you laugh, they can make you cry. You don’t
need to be a snobby art critic to understand what they mean, words can
express the emotions that lay underneath. They can be blunt or they
can be as open to interpretation as you want them to be. But
essentially words are what set me free. Therefore… I write simply
because I must.

Thank you for your kind words

By Matt Tha 5hat

I don’t get down in too many ciphers just because I’m afraid of getting called out. But as of lately I have been itching to get down.

What ciphers are at bboy jams are really the circles where they get down. It may look like they are battling (half the time they are) but they are really vibing off and feeling each others energy. A lot of people has a misconception due to the fact that this dance is competitive, but it truly isn’t violent, and that’s what stepped this dance within the culture of Hip-hop. This is the drive bboys have to want to get better, to evolve.

So aside from that last night I went to a place I like to frequently go to called, Funky soul. It’s in echo park and they play the music I like to hear which is that of funky James Brown type of music. It hits my soul and makes me want to get down! Also every time I go there people are always getting down in these ciphers.

The nastiest bboys like Casper, Smurf, Nasty Ray, K-mel, Crumbs, just know that that place has alotta sick cats that get down there. Last night was no different. I heard the music playing and I was like “who’s getting down right now.” I went straight to the cipher and saw Primate battle monkeys (which are a part of Super Cr3w), Tony Styles from the Renegades, and Bboy Reveals brother. I felt the energy and something inside me led me into that circle of fine. I threw in a couple of rounds and felt good.

I even went up to each bboy and gave them mad love and respect. I also talked to Primate and told him it was good seeing him get down again. He also gave me props as well. So I asked him:

“What advice would you give me, a boy who’s not that new to the scene but not well known?”

He replied:
“Dude do you dance the way you want to dance just because bboys are top bboy, does not mean you have to dance like them. You got your own moves, I see you.”

After that I was in awe like sick awe. I never really get to talk to sick bboys like him because I get intimidated and scared but getting down last night fulfilled my soul, it filled a void in me.

Special thanks to Primate from Battle Monkeys
Thank you for your kind words! Matt the 5hat here signing off.

Remember
“It’s not about the move, it’s about the groove”

Solitary

By KennyDiamond

It’s strange how a world of so much can leave you all by yourself.
Many things can be successful in a world filled with the right set of
circumstances, love and life… yet, with those priceless qualities of
enormous quantities, to appreciate them, you must know the opposite. A
variety of reasons can make a person feel alone or isolated.

The truth hurts to know and the truth is that the world is harsh at
times and to some, being solitary is a bad thing. Being solitary can
create self-doubt and self-hate. “Am I respected. Am I loved? Am I
admired?” Being solitary can really bother a person’s train of thought
and sometimes their whole mentality. But what some fail to perceive is
that when you are alone, YOU are the boss, YOU are the one who makes
the rules, YOU can choose to wake up in the morning and be inventive.
You can choose to love or not to love. Me personally, I prefer to be
solitary simply because I have the mindset of “I’d rather be alone in
peace than be surrounded by turmoil.” But that’s just me, it’s clearly
up to you.

When you are alone, you have the potential to look at the path your
life is on or has taken. From there, you can determine who you want to
be, what you want to do, when you want to start, where you want to go,
why you should, and how to cease. In a world populated by billions of
people, you can be sure that you are not alone…

The Alternate Reality

By Christian Capili

Fusion XII 2011. Keone Madrid and Mariel Martin.

        Genius.

        Breathtaking.

Words can’t be said to how beautiful this piece is, different interpretations, different opinions, but all comes down to this: “it’s amazing and beautiful.” A piece like no other.  A piece that entails different realities of both by Keone and Mari. No words spoken by any of the performers, yet depicts a moving story that leaves me if not anyone who witnesses it in awe.

Even as a dancer I can’t help but feel so moved and inspired by this song. It’s just a wonderful piece to watch and a really jaw dropping performance by the group itself. I find myself sitting on the edge of my seat with many emotions run through me because... well quite frankly it’s just that Amazing

Words alone, can’t comment on this piece, I feel like this piece really are one of those once in a life time, never copied, never re-done or anything. And though I wasn’t there I know for sure, those who sat at that event felt their heart being lifted into the sky and experiencing the freedom and creativity is among us. And that is what that piece really portrays, to inspire, and to create.

Bboy Focus Tutorials

By MattThe5hat

Bboy Focus is a modern day bboy who also represents the art of dance. Bboy Focus represents Flo Mo Crew, out of Poland. He has a beat hitting style along with dynamic power moves as well. His video gives us a thorough idea of how this dance should be done.

The way Bboy Focus drops his knowledge with the moves and he uses counts! To me, Foundation is very crucial to a bboys arsenal. There so many step I myself have trouble keeping up in today’s day and age. Bboying has become so athletic and dynamic, kids are leaving power moves before they learn footwork, let alone foundation. Remember we dance to a certain beat!!!

Top Rocks

I enjoy top rocks because it helps you ride the music, and gives you an entrance

Footworks

To me footwork is power. In this day and age of bboying, everyone is doing power moves. But to me in terms of Bboying, footwork shows a Bboys true creativity.

But remember these are just videos just to show you a small taste. Get out there and get down! Safe rockin’ ya’ll

Kodachrome Interview with Shaun Evaristo

Video is a little outdated, BUT it’s still something that illustrates what goes through the mind of Shaun Evaristo. The interview is quite insightful and at the same time brings to the table things that I find inspirational…..

“Know your body, study your body to the point of where, mentally you don’t need the physical….. so that way I could focus on the music itself. Mentally I could have a mirror in front of me if I wanted to.”
-Shaun Evaristo

Something about his existence and ability to dance has an impact not just in my life but to everyone in the dance community. But in the end he is like any ordinary dancer, like you and I. He was once an amateur and his passion and love for dancing is what brought him to where he is now. The entire interview is worth to watch, it’ll move you and make you get up out of your chair and just dance. I won’t really spoil it much and give my opinion about this, because there is a better place for me to do this in a later time.

My goal is for to interview him personally and gain the knowledge I always sought out for by him.

Have fun and enjoy this inspiring and insightful video!

Push

By KennyDiamond

How will you ever know if you're good at something? You need to have
something question your abilities and then show how well honed your
abilities are. To be challenged isn’t a bad thing although different
people may differ with that idea. It is a call for your abilities into
a contest but how you handle the result of the challenge is what’s
most important.

I know not everyone lives the same life, some have more difficult
lives than others. But the idea is all the same. What will you do with
a challenge? You have the choice to take it on or back down. Will you
face the challenge? Whether positive or negative results, you will
gain experience nonetheless. Or will you let the challenge intimidate
you to where it becomes “nothing ventured, nothing gained”?

That is a basic ideal of survival, to manage the best you can against
all challenges. I’m injured. Does it bother me? Yes. But I cannot be
down or depressed about it. I know that it isn’t the end of the world.
I will return to doing what I love and will more than likely return
hungrier than ever. This is an incredible challenge to me but I am not
going to allow it to weaken me or stop me from what I want to do with
my career and life. Everyone faces challenges daily. This doesn’t mean
to go out and look for a fight but see how incredible you can become.
Face your world of challenges. After all, hard work beats talent when
talent refuses to work hard.

Doubt

By Emeroy Bernardo
No one is immune to doubt. As much confidence anyone may have, we all face it. It's what we do when it comes is when it counts. It can hit you even harder when your best doesn't seem to be enough. It can make things we're normally good at seem harder than usual. But it's part of the process, there are just aspects of our ability that just need growing. Or perhaps we DO have the ability, it's just the initial approach. The first step in laying down the foundation.

I recently had my bout with doubt a few weeks ago. For a moment I felt like my efforts were in vain and not enough, and I felt paralyzed to take action. As discouraging as it felt, it quickly helped me realize what must be done.

What I learned and am constantly reminded is that doubt is stemmed from fear caused by past experiences and short comings. There is nothing wrong with feeling doubt. It can be a great critic in cutting out the things you don’t need or the things you could do better on.
There are so many key elements that can trigger your doubt with only one important factor. You and you’re desire. It is the key piece in your process. It gives you the energy you decide whether to move forward or not.

"Worrying is like a rocking chair, it gives you something to do but gets you NOWHERE." The best way to really get rid of it is taking that first step. To continue onward is an act of courage. Some may call it stupidity, but most brilliant ideas of the past century were considered stupid and practically impossible before it was done.

The Wright Brothers weren't exactly considered the first choice in mans attempt to fly. It was the heavily favored and financially supported Samuel Pierpont Langley, who had a team of the most brilliant minds of the time. Yet not many people know who this man is.

The Wright brothers had NO MONEY, they paid for everything through their bike shop, and not a single person in their team had a college degree. But they did have one thing, they had a belief and a desire that pushed them forward that eventually changed the world.

Your belief in what your doing will be the energy that you need to press on. Your bravery will be that light for others to do the same.

They say love makes us do foolish things. Well, if we love what we do and love who we are when we do it: “No cause is lost if there is but one fool to fight for it.”

Experience, Knowledge and Confidence.

By KennyDiamond

With any skill comes knowledge and with the knowledge, you'll have
many great opportunities and the abilities to experience more to
continue the cycle. How do we know if what we learned will eventually
work? There is only one way to find out. You need to apply what you've
learned in order for it to work for you and not against you. If not,
you'll never develop the confidence in your knowledge or that trust
and reassurance that you will eventually need. That certainty of what
you know will allow you to continue growing on and on.

For exemplification, many of us go to school where we are taught a
lesson every day. We then practice the methods and/or techniques and
are tested on it in order to reach a certain level of understanding.
From there, you can continue to higher levels. Things that I was
taught in school remain with me... and in certain situations. I can
apply them without worry or uncertainty. I am confident in what I've
learned and have no worries applying it to my everyday life. In
football, the sport is 10 percent physical and 90 percent mental. The
physical aspect is drilled with great objective. Then when you reach a
certain level, the mental aspect will take over. That’s what we call
Heart and Soul. This will create things that may not have been
foreseen or intended, but seem to occur naturally because of the
confidence generated by everything up until that point. In essence,
the point I am trying to reach is learn to be confident in yourself.
Experience. Knowledge. Confidence. And the cycle goes on…
