Revamped Family Crest and New Video Intro

By Emeroy Bernardo
New Version of the FamBiz Family Crest!

I've been wanting to work on something like this for a while. This is the new version of FamBiz's family crest when they transitioned from being E.S.U.I. (Elements of Style Under the Influence) to Family Bizness. I was meticulous as to how the design was going to turn out. I picked out what best represented us. Each part of the crest has a significant meaning, which I'll explain in a bit.

Current Version of the FamBiz Family Crest

I recently was inspired to revamp the current look of the crest to this current one after being inspired by 9 Surf Studios. It had taken my awhile to finish, but here it is!

Now let me walk you through the family crest:

Gold is the elevation of the mind through our practices in meditation, creative expression, and hard work. With a quiet and clear mind, we allow ourselves to simply focus and do what must be done.

The wings were placed to represent Los Angeles, city of angels. But it also means swiftness and protection. As a family, we must do what we can to protect each other from harms way.

Blue represents our pride for the team and for each other. Everyone giving their best individual effort that benefits everyone around them. This team is our family and we dance our hearts out for our family. It is the color of loyalty.

Red is the willingness to keep fighting on no matter how hard things may get. No matter what challenges present it self before us, we keep pressing through. It is the color of the Warrior.

Speakers simply represent our music and dance.

This new video was made with the great tutorials from Video Copilot! They're a great source of After Effects training and tutorials, and good quality like this is hard to find.

I had also grown tired of the previous title card of our videos, so soon after I finished the new version of the family crest. I went straight into working on this one. It took me a couple of days to finish, but voila! It turned out pretty sick and will be our new title card for a while. I hope you guys enjoy the work!

Quotes From My Three Favorite Coaches

By: Emeroy Bernardo

I'm no basketball player or really have been, nor have I every been that great at sports. But what I know I am is a dancer and leader. A lot of demand is expected in being a leader and and even more to be a great one. There are so many elements that have to be considered from team chemistry, aesthetics, and the psychology of each person and the team as a whole.

When I first started leading, I was ruthless jerk that had nearly impossible expectations from my dancers. I had forgotten that I was working with people, not robots. Throughout the years I have evolved into what I am today, less temperamental and a bit more outspoken.

About a year ago, I decided to study up on some coaches and how they brought their team together from the ground up through both books and documentaries if there were any available. What I learned was truly inspirational and motivational, and helped me further developed my style of leading because of it.

Today one of the members had posted a quote on the Facebook group, which compelled me to share these quotes. I hope you guys enjoy the read.

Phil Jackson

  • "Good teams become great ones when the members trust each other enough to surrender the Me for the We.”

  • “Always keep an open mind and a compassionate heart.”

  • “Love is the force that ignites the spirit and binds teams together.”

  • “Wisdom is always an overmatch for strength.”

  • “Approach the game with no preset agendas and you'll probably come away surprised at your overall efforts.”

  • "Once you've done the mental work, there comes a point you have to throw yourself into the action and put your heart on the line. That means not only being brave, but being compassionate towards yourself, your teammates and your opponents."

  • "Winning is important to me, but what brings me real joy is the experience of being fully engaged in whatever I'm doing."

John Wooden

  • "Talent is God given. Be humble. Fame is man-given. Be grateful. Conceit is self-given. Be careful."

  • "Things turn out best for the people who make the best of the way things turn out."

  • "Never mistake activity for achievement."

  • "Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.”

  • "A coach is someone who can give correction without causing resentment."

  • "I'd rather have a lot of talent and a little experience than a lot of experience and a little talent."

  • "If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?"

  • "It's the little details that are vital. Little things make big things happen."

  • "The main ingredient of stardom is the rest of the team."

  • "Success comes from knowing that you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming."

  • "Success is never final, failure is never fatal. It's courage that counts."

  • “The best way to improve the team is to improve ourselves.”

  • “Discipline yourself and others won’t need to.”

  • “Time spent getting even would be better spent trying to get ahead.”

  • “It is what you learn after you know it all that counts.”

  • “There is nothing stronger than gentleness.”

  • “Big things are accomplished only through the perfection of minor details.”

  • “Goals achieved with little effort are seldom worthwhile or lasting.”

  • “Be most interested in finding the best way not in having your own way.”

  • “What is right is more important than who is right.”

  • “Don’t let making a living prevent you from making a life.”

  • “Although there is no progress without change, not all change is progress.”

  • “If we’d magnified blessings as much as we magnified disappointments we would all be much happier.”

  • “The worst thing that you can do for another person is the things they can and should do for themselves.“

  • “Do not permit what you cannot do to interfere with what you can do.”

  • “Love is the greatest of all words in our language.”

  • “Much can be accomplished by teamwork when no one is concerned who gets credit.”

  • “Never make excuses; your friends don’t need them and your foes won’t believe them.”

  • “Make each day your masterpiece.”

  • “Make friendship of fine art.”

  • "Acquire peace of mind by making the effort to become the best of which you are capable."

  • "Be quick, but don't rush."

Vince Lombardi

  • “The achievements of an organization are the results of the combined effort of each individual.”

  • “People who work together will win, whether it be against complex football defenses, or the problems of modern society.”

  • “Individual commitment to a group effort – that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.”

  • “Mental toughness is many things and rather difficult to explain. Its qualities are sacrifice and self-denial. Also, most importantly, it is combined with a perfectly disciplined will that refuses to give in. It’s a state of mind – you could call it character in action.”

  • “The good Lord gave you a body that can stand most anything. It’s your mind you have to convince.”

  • “Once you learn to quit, it becomes a habit.”

  • “Perfection is not attainable. But if we chase perfection, we can catch excellence.”

  • “The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather in a lack of will.”

  • “Leaders are made, they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.”

  • “Leadership is based on a spiritual quality --- the power to inspire, the power to inspire others to follow.”

  • “Winning is a habit. Watch your thoughts, they become your beliefs. Watch your beliefs, they become your words. Watch your words, they become your actions. Watch your actions, they become your habits. Watch your habits, they become your character.”

  • “The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender.”

  • “Confidence is contagious and so is lack of confidence, and a customer will recognize both.”

  • “If you don’t think you’re a winner, you don’t belong here.”

  • “If you aren’t fired with enthusiasm, you’ll be fired with enthusiasm.”

  • “Some of us will do our jobs well and some will not, but we will all be judged on one thing: the result.”

  • “Winning is not everything – but making the effort to win is.”

  • “Success demands singleness of purpose.

Sky Is The Limit

By Kenny Tran
“The world is yours.” A very powerful.. yet, simple statement from the famous cult movie, “Scarface”. We all have the ability to do whatever we want to do with our life.

Do you believe that? If you do, that’s great because it can lead you to have much greater life experience.

But if you don’t, then why? What would stop you from believing it? Many seem to have some sort of “reason” to limit themselves and that limitation can hold back a lot of progress in life.

But why? Why would you want to stop yourself from gaining the life experience that could lead you to reach your full potential? Some are limited because of fear. Fear of what? Failure? Makes sense. But without failure, one cannot know what success is. Am I right? While others just carry sheer ignorance and ignore what is laid out in front of them, perhaps the blueprint to move forward in life.

Think of life as a book... your book. When the book is open, you can write and fill it with the contents of your mind, the thoughts that move you. When it is closed, there is nowhere to write.. so you’re pretty much just closed-minded. I believe that if you can live openly or without limitation, you can write as many chapters of your life and fill your book. If you live with limitation then your book will be pretty much empty and not even have a full introduction. After all, the world is yours sounds a lot better than “the world could have been yours”, don’t you think?

Farewell For Now

This is a few days over due, but I want to dedicate this blog post to rookie member Alan Caballes, who has to leave the team to head back home to Florida after World of Dance-LA. We just wanted to give him a shout out and let him know that his presence with this team was important like everyone else's. And he will be missed.

Yes there is Facebook.

Yes there is e-mail.

But what both of those lack are the substance of human interaction, which cannot be experienced through the digital realm. It's unfortunate that he has to step out of the journey, but it is what it is. He's needed more else where.

When we first met him the day of auditions and workshops, we didn't know he wasn't from around here. He was a bit shy from the get go but that didn't take away his willingness to learn and improve. One of the things that was definitely noticeable from the get go is that he would not stop smiling. Even if he was kept messing up certain parts during the routine and we would yell at him to fix his mistakes, he'd just look at you with wide eyes and a smile and say, "Yeah!" And keep going.

When the season really got rolling we came to learn that he originally was only in California for the summer. But once he made it onto the team, his intentions of going home any time soon were dropped as he wanted to stay here and join us on our journey throughout the 2010-2011 season.  Throughout the season  along with performances and competitions, he joined us on a few of our fundraisers, which were about 4-8 hours long. It was during one of these fundraisers that we found out his real name: Manvil. Although he was a bit shy and embarrassed of his name, we thought it was a dope, unique name. He always made sure to be at rehearsal ready to work, and for his birthday we went to one the members house after rehearsal and celebrated with him until the wee hours of the night.

Though it was a short lived season with us, it was a great pleasure for him to be a part of this team and this journey. He'll always have a special place with this family. And to consider this not as a goodbye, but a farewell… for now.

By the way, Cheyanne will miss you too.

A Quote From Safi A. Thomas

"Dancers deserve better and they deserve more. They have been receiving so little for so long that they think that the limited dance education they receive is all there is. They are taught that popularity makes a good teacher. That “hot” choreography makes a good teacher. That “hot” songs make a good teacher. These subjective things provide dancers with nothing viable. No trajectory towards true success. They are not being given a solid education in dance ( dance theory, music theory, kinesiology, etc.) They’re just paying to play Simon Says. This creates style clones, not style originators"

FamBiz at World of Dance-LA 2011

Check us out performing at WOD-LA! It was definitely the biggest world of dance event yet! I think my friend who helps run the event told me that there were about 12,000+ people there! Not only where there a grip load of people, but there were a grip load of celebrities coming by and hanging out! Aside from Nick Cannon who was featured as the guest host, one of our members ran into Taboo and Apl from the BEP! I was told that Ron Artest and Snoop Dogg were even in the building. The event was sick dope and it was definitely an honor to be on that stage with my Family and with all the other talented dance crews out there.
