Judge Me By My Choices Or Nature?

By Kenny Diamond

Judgment of ourselves and of other people is in question every day.
Also in question is what tools or facts we use to make up our minds
about someone or thing. Do we consider all known aspects when we’re
judging a situation, or ignore some of what we know and focus on what
we deem relevant? Can we judge a person by their family, or past, or
promises, or solely on their actions in the present day? Call it what
you want; environment vs genetics or nature vs nurture, but there is
question as to the defining elements in a persons character.

Our judgment is everything to us. It tells us what we are going to
keep in our lives and what we’re going to dispose of… And as objective
as we might try to be, we can’t always make the right decisions nor
know what the right decisions actually are. The family dog has on two
occasions attacked someone it thought was threatening; is it
protective and loyal, or simply violent and might someday pose a
threat? If our partner has an apparent and obvious urge to cheat, do
we trust that their choices will be stronger than their instinct? If a
killer were to have a son, would the child follow his fathers lead
because of shared genes or even to fulfill some familiar legacy, or
would they they ignore any urge or connection to the parents? Is a
psychopath to be judged by their inability to feel emotions, or by
their ability to understand emotions, ethics and societies standards?

In any case, it is all circumstantial, and we would judge people based
on our own experiences with them. But at what point do we disregard a
background or history when we’re judging someone? What’s relevant and
what’s not, and who’s to say? Can we take the risk of trusting only
what we’ve witnessed, what we know or what we deem important?

One Love,
@KennyDiamond
